Promotional pens make for great advertisements because they're always sprouting legs. Folks borrow pens or leave them behind where they're picked up by others. Your pen might go through five or six owners before the ink runs dry. That's at least five or six people who saw your company logo. And that doesn't even include the friends and colleagues of those temporary owners.
To buy the right pen, keep your target audience in mind. Some only need a pen to jot down a grocery list. Others need a pen that's comfortable to use, because they spend their whole day writing. To keep a customer using your pen, give them what they need.
